What should Christian parents do if they have a prodigal son (or daughter)?

Question: "What should Christian parents do if they have a prodigal son (or daughter)?"

Answer:
There is inherent in the story of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) several principles that believing parents can use to react to and deal with children who walk contrary to the way in which the parents have raised them. Parents need to remember that once their children have reached adulthood, they are no longer under the authority of their parents.

In the story of the prodigal son, the younger son takes his inheritance and goes into a far country and wastes it. In the case of a child who is not a born-again believer, this is just doing what comes naturally. In the case of a child who at one time made a clear profession of faith in Christ, we call this child a “prodigal.” The meaning of this word is “a person who has spent his resources wastefully,” a good description of a child who leaves home and wastes the spiritual inheritance that his parents have invested in him. All the years of nurture, teaching, love, and care are forgotten as this child rebels against God. For all rebellion is against God first, and is manifested in a rebellion against parents and their authority.

Notice that the father in the parable does not stop his child from leaving. Nor does he follow after his child to try to protect him. Rather, this parent faithfully stays at home and prays, and when that child “comes to his senses” and turns around and heads back, the parent is waiting and watching and runs to greet that child even when he is a “long way off.”

When our sons and daughters go off on their own—assuming they are of legal age to do so—and make choices that we know will bring hard consequences, parents must let go and allow them to leave. The parent does not follow after, and the parent does not interfere with the consequences that will come. Rather, the parent stays at home, keeps faithfully praying and watching for the signs of repentance and a change of direction. Until that comes, parents keep to their own counsel, do not support the rebellion, and do not interfere (1 Peter 4:15).

Once children are of an age of legal adulthood, they are subject only to the authority of God and the delegated authority of government (Romans 13:1-7). As parents, we can support our prodigals with love and prayer and be ready to come alongside once they have made their move toward God. God often uses self-inflicted misery to bring us to wisdom, and it is up to each individual to respond correctly. As parents, we cannot save our children—only God can do that. Until that time comes, we must watch, pray, and leave the matter in the hands of God. This may be a painful process, but when carried out biblically, it will bring peace of mind and heart. We cannot judge our children, only God can. In this there is a great comfort: “Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” (Genesis 18:25b).

Another Christmas Without My Daughter

This was first published on my other blog, The Princess Warrior Ministries, on December 19, 2009.

This will be the 7th Christmas without my daughter. No, she is not dead, but it seems like it because she is not in my life and she is no longer the person I used to know. I have mourned her loss like a death, but it's like a death that never ends...a death without closure.

I am a Christian mother. I raised my son and daughter in church. I prayed with them. I helped them learn scripture in AWANA club (which stands for Approved Workman Are Not Ashamed) , but one day Satan had victory. He had victory because I didn't tell them about their enemy. They knew a lot about God, but not about the one who despised them. He had subtly wormed his way into their hearts and minds and took over.

I'm not exactly sure which one lost their desire for God and church and fell prey to the devil first. I do know that my son's heart had already strayed far from God while he was still at home (he's the oldest). My daughter had started to become rebellious in how she dressed, talked, etc. She is a very gifted writer, but she was writing some very dark stuff. We tried to persuade her to put her talents to work for the Lord, but they fell on deaf ears. I know now that it was because she did not know God at all.

Then one day she was gone. She left to go visit her father for what I thought would be a 2 week vacation, but she never came back. A plan had been devised to whisk her away. Even though she was going through that rebellious stage that all teenagers go through I don't think she remembers how close we were.

When my daughter left, my son had been thinking about going out on his own, but stayed with me and his step-father for another year because he was so worried about me. I would lie on my bed and cry for days at a time. I even had to go to an outpatient clinic for severe depression during that time.

I finally told my son to go. I didn't want to hold him back. He was old enough to try it on his own, but he didn't realize, and I never told him, that I sank into an even deeper depression after he left. But, I want to stop right now and thank him. I want to thank him for trying his best to fill the gap. I love you for that, son. You are my heart and I couldn't ask for a better son!

Anyway, when my daughter left, my son held back his pain and helped me instead. He did break down one time and told me that he had already lost his family once when his dad and I divorced and now he had lost it all over again. We held each other and cried. How in the world could a father, in good conscience, think it best to separate his children like this.

When my son finally went out on his own he stopped going to church all together. He drank occasionally and played violent video games until the early hours of the morning. He continued to gain weight as he stuffed himself with comfort food to try and fill the void in his life. He didn't have God and He and his sister had once been very close…or so he thought.

My son and I kept in contact with each other though. We would talk on the phone and he and I would have lunch together and go to an occasional movie.

During this time I prayed for my children, clinging to God's Word, that if I trained my children in the way that is right that when they are older they will not depart from it. God never said they wouldn't stray. I would always tell my son that I was praying for him and I told him I missed him at church, but I knew, at the time, that it was falling on deaf ears as well.

One night I had a dream, actually a horrible nightmare. It was the most real dream I have ever experienced. I saw my son in a coffin. In my dream I could feel all the emotions a mother would feel knowing that death had taken their child. It happened by accident. He had bought a gun for protection and was showing a friend when it accidentally went off killing him instantly. In this dream I cried out to God…"WHY?! Why, did you take my son?!" and God answered, “Your son was never going to live for me. Your daughter is not mine and in order to save her I had to take your son to bring her to me.”

I awoke in a cold sweat. The immense sorrow I felt in the dream because of my son’s death still felt so real and it stayed with me all day. When I got out of bed I immediately called him to see if he was okay. I didn’t tell him about the dream.

A few days later we went to lunch together and I shared the dream with him. He looked startled and then said something that gave me goose bumps. He said, “Mom, I had just recently planned to buy a gun.”

It was shortly thereafter that my son started back to church. He heard our pastor talk about true and false conversion and about men putting away childish things (1 Cor. 13:11) (video games came to mind). That day he made his way to the altar during the invitation and gave his heart and life over to Christ and has been at church ever since. He gave up his video games, sold his system and games and even stopped working at a place that sold them. He was a “Game Manager” at a popular video store.

I thank God everyday that my son returned to the things he had been taught, but I still have another child out there, one that has completely turned against God and me. She is so bitter and angry even though she claims she is not.

Satan has had his victories, but he WILL lose the ultimate battle. My God is greater than he and I still cling to my Lord’s promises. He is not willing that any should perish. I keep asking in Jesus’ name, the name above all names, to save my daughter. I know He will…in His time. The greater His story...the greater His glory! In Him I have hope and in Him I have what I need to carry on.

I will not stop praying until my prodigal has come home...

Waiting on God,

The Princess Warrior

P.S. If you are a Christian mother or father, please, please, please:

1) Talk with your children (no matter how old) about their salvation. Don't just assume they are saved. Make sure you see evidence of God in their heart. Just because they said a prayer at the altar does not guarantee that they believed "on" the Lord Jesus Christ. Many believe "in" the Lord -- even satan and his unholy angels believe (James 2:19). A saving faith is when we believe "on" the Lord, putting our complete trust in Christ's finished work at the cross (plus nothing else) to gain access to God and His grace and mercy. A saving faith brings repentance. A saving faith produces fruit in any believer...young or old. Do you see any fruit? Is their character changing for the better? Are they reading their Bible and praying without having to be told. Do you see a real love for God, for God's ways, for God's house, the preaching of the Word, and for God's people. Would they still live for God if you were no longer in their lives?

And 2) While teaching them about God, also warn them about their enemy -- the one who wants to steal, kill, and destroy -- the one who will use many tactics to trip them up and cause them to fall -- the one who walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he can devour (1 Peter 5:8). This enemy's name is satan (I don't even capitalize his name lest I give him any honor). Your children can have victory over him, but only through the power of God in their hearts and daily walking close to Him. They NEED your daily prayers! This world and the things of it are one giant lure for satan's kingdom.

If you are wondering what are some of the proofs of salvation in your children's lives, or even in your own life, please take a look at both of the following blog posts:

Sneak Peek: A Conversation with My Prodigal

PICTURE POSTED ON FACEBOOK BY MY SON-IN-LAW

My Precious Prodigal Daughter: That pic is EPIC! LOL!!!!!!!

Me: Hey (Son-in-Law), hope you’re doing okay. Just wanted you to know that if it were not for a Christian mother's prayer being answered, your precious (to me and you) wife would most likely be dead right now and would never have met you. On another occasion, prayers saved both of you from serious harm.

Let me tell you both stories....Me, my son, and my daughter woke up late one morning. I was gonna be late for work and they were gonna be late for school. We all started scurrying around trying to get ready, but the Holy Spirit gripped hold of my heart and told me to pray for my children's safety and to do it right now. So, I started praying.

I yelled down to the other end of the house and told the kids that we needed to pray together before they left (My son had his driver’s license and a car so he had started driving his sister to school). Shortly afterwards I heard my son and daughter saying, “Bye mom!” and I yelled, “WE NEED TO PRAY!” They said, “But, we’re gonna be late.” So, I said, “Go ahead, then, and I’ll keep praying!" I went back to my bathroom to finish getting ready and I kept calling on the Lord to keep my babies safe. A few minutes later, my son came running back into the house and said, “Mom, there’s been an accident!!” My heart leaped into my throat. I said, “What happened?!” Just then my daughter came into the house and they both told me that they had just gotten into my son's car when they heard a loud boom, a crash, and screeching tires. I looked toward the end of my driveway and saw that my mailbox had been completely demolished and a truck was farther up the road…. so, I ran to check on the driver.

She was running late for work also. She was traveling about 70 MPH down our 45 MPH street. Just as she got to the curve, a little ways out from our driveway, her tire blew and she lost control. She wiped out our mailbox and slid about 200 feet down the road. If my children had left the house 2 minutes or so earlier they would have been pulling out of our driveway. Depending on how my son would have chosen to pull out of the driveway that morning this truck would have either hit them head-on or broadside. I could have lost both my children that day in the blink of an eye. We all were visibly shaken… and then my son remembered that I had been praying for their safety and that they had chosen to go on without praying. He made the statement that from that moment forward we needed to “ALWAYS pray BEFORE getting ready EVERY morning” and that is exactly what we did.

After that fateful day, I would always tell them to “take Jesus with them” when they left for school each morning. I can still remember hearing my daughter say, “Come on, Jesus, let’s go!” Lol!

Now, why didn’t God prompt my son or daughter to pray? Because neither one of them had a real relationship with the Lord. Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” Only the true children of God can hear from God and get their prayers answered. Going to church doesn’t get you into God’s family, but having a life-changing relationship with the God of the true church will.

Why did God prompt me to pray? He could have intervened without me praying. He didn’t need me…but, God knew that I was gonna need to build my faith in Him for the dark days that He knew lay ahead and He also knew that if I had lost my children it would have “completely” destroyed me. And on that day, He also planted a seed in the minds of my children. They knew their mother prayed and they saw God’s power at work.

Here’s another answered prayer...the day of your Jeep accident...around 3:45 p.m. or so, I was feeling pretty bad, so I thought maybe if I lay down for a little while then I would feel better. As I lay there, I tossed and turned, and even though I was tired, I couldn’t go to sleep. Just as I turned on my right side toward my bedroom door, a memory flashed before me. A memory of my daughter, your wife, at the age of about 6 or 7...running into my bedroom and saying, “Get up mom! You gonna sleep all day?” It seemed sooooo real to me and I was immediately overcome with emotion and got back up.

When my husband walked into the living room he saw me in tears and asked what was wrong. I told him that I was overcome with emotion and not sure why and that I thought, maybe, it had to do with not having my children near me anymore, but for whatever reason, my focus was on my daughter this time. I even pulled out all her old school pictures, glamor shots, vacation pictures, etc. and as I sat there going through each one I prayed for her salvation, and I prayed for her safety. I just felt compelled to do this. It was hard to shake the extreme emotion I was feeling.

A couple of hours later I got back on Facebook and my heart stopped when I saw that y’all had been in a car accident. It really didn’t dawn on me at first that during that same time period I had been praying for your safety, but when it did, a wave of goosebumps came over me and I felt weak. I cried out to God and thanked Him for the power of the Holy Spirit prompting me to pray and for hearing my plea! Y’all could have been hurled out into eternity – lost! I shuddered at the thought!

As I looked at the photos I couldn’t help but see the major difference in the damage to both vehicles. The other car “looked” like a totaled vehicle, but your Jeep did not. Now, I know Jeeps are tough, but I feel with all my heart that God intervened. I mean I had my daughter’s photos spread out all over the place, praying as I looked at each one. I still get emotional when I think about it.

When my husband came back home later that night, I told him y'all had been in an accident and I showed him the photos. He could hardly believe the difference in the 2 vehicles. Then I asked him, “And what was I doing just prior to their accident?” and he almost turned white when he realized.

I know that y’all don’t believe there is a living, loving God, but there is and He loves me enough to answer my prayer and loves you enough to keep you and your wife from leaving this life unprepared.

I just felt I needed to share that. It is info for you to discard or contemplate, but I pray that you will stop and think about it.

Anyway, I love you and pray for you both every day. Have a good night!

P.S. There are many other answered prayers I could tell you about, but hopefully I'll be able to share them on another day.

My Precious Prodigal Daughter: I believe in a psychic link because you're my blood. I don't believe God spoke to you. I have many gut feelings that turn out to be true. I think it's our sixth sense, not a god.

Me: I've heard many non-believers say that God does not answer prayers, so I gave you examples. Yes, these answered prayers were connected to you, but there have been many others that were not. Here's an example:

When I first started going back to ch
urch I wanted to make prayer a priority in my life, but I felt that my prayers were reaching the ceiling, but going no further. This troubled me and I started asking God if He was hearing me, but I still wasn't sure. Then very shortly, thereafter, a random man that I worked with (at the same company, but not in the same area, so I didn't know him very well) told me that his grown daughter had been in a car accident. She was in a coma and on life support and was not expected to live because her injuries were so severe and she had a lot of internal bleeding.

This man was not a believer and he didn't know I was a Christian (because I rarely saw him), but he found out that I was when I told him I would pray (now, this was a few days before Thanksgiving). When I got home from work that morning the Lord urged me to pray and he urged me to pray in a big way. So, I started praying that this woman would be brought out of her coma and be well enough to go home and be with her family on Thanksgiving.

I didn't know this man well and I did not know his daughter, but God overwhelmed me with a fervent concern for her. For the next couple of days I couldn't sleep because I would wake up with the need to pray for this random woman. I can't even fully describe the concern that God placed on my heart for her...almost as if she were someone I loved dearly. Anyway, 2 nights later I ran into this guy again (someone I rarely saw, remember...now I've seen him twice in one week) and I asked him about his daughter. He was overjoyed to tell me that his daughter had made, what the doctors called, a miraculous recovery and that she was going home on Thanksgiving Day. I turned white and the man asked me what was wrong. I said, “Oh, nothing is wrong, everything is right!” and I proceeded to tell him about all the praying I had done and was also able to witness to him about my Savior.

God knew what I needed and He answered my prayer in a big way. I needed to know that He heard me, so He urged me to pray for a stranger, and worked what everyone called a miracle, but God would call it a day’s work in the life of one of His children. But, the miracle did not stop there, for God had seen another need. The man, whose daughter I had prayed for, died a few months later. But, before he died he accepted Christ as His Savior. See, God knew that I needed to know my relationship with Him was real, but he also had seen this lost man and orchestrated events so that he would be open and receptive to the gospel. All our days are numbered and God knows each one. We may think God is far away, but He is always watching and orchestrating life to give all a chance to come to Him.

There are many other examples I could give you, but I’ve written a book already. Lol! But, I never stop being amazed at my God and His mercy. When non-believers cry out that God is a myth or is an uncaring entity it is because they have never experienced the life-changing, prayer answering God that I have. The thing is…He’s only a prayer away.

I love you Lulu. I hope you have a good day! ~Mom

My Precious Prodigal Daughter: That is quite a story! Love you, too!
_________________________________________________________________________________

This is the first time a conversation with my daughter (about the Lord) has ended like this! Although, she may be showing sarcasm by calling it "quite a story"...it's hard to tell sometimes with my PP (Precious Prodigal). Most conversations wind up ripping my heart out, but thank you Jesus, not this time! It does help to seek the Lord before witnessing instead of doing it as a knee-jerk reaction. Nevertheless, all I can do is keep praying for her and keep loving her and let God do the rest. She is so much safer with "He who neither sleeps nor slumbers".

Anyway, thanks for reading this dear friend. If I cross your mind in the days to come please pray for me as I continue to try to reach my daughter and her husband and I will remember you each day of this ministry. Just like you, many times I get anxious because I know our time is running out, but I have faith that God will save them...on His time schedule, not mine. Every day I have to keep placing them back into the Father's hands.

Ode to a Prodigal

PRIDE: The first sin......it started with one word, “I”…….Satan declared, “I” will ascend into heaven, “I” will exalt my throne above the stars of God: “I” will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: “I” will ascend above the heights of the clouds; “I” will be like the most High. ~Isaiah 14:13-14

My wants, my needs, my rights – the cry of a selfish people. The intolerant of the intolerant. The judges of the judgmental…who also dare to judge God. I must have my way or I will disown you father, mother, sister, brother, husband, wife. You must accept my selfishness or I will cast salt into your open wound and turn away from the good you have done because it was not enough. It was never enough. Your sacrifices I spit upon…you should have done more. I was not satisfied. I was not content. Your pain means nothing…it only infuriates me. It’s not about you, it’s about ME! It has always been about me….my wants, my needs, my rights. You must meet them or I will reject you. You must feed them or I will leave you wanting. For I am my own god and you must bow to my wishes or I will not love you…I will not need you…and I will show you no mercy…I will only show you disdain and look at you with loathing. Why? Because you still exist. You are a memory of what I once was. You are a portrait of a good way and a right way…a way that I turned my back on…a way that brought me peace…a way that felt so different…a way that had hope…but, a way that caused ME great pain because it was a way that caused me to love…and love hurt. My heart was broken. My hope was crushed. My plans were squashed. My dreams were shattered. My darkness was made darker and my thoughts turned inside…and my anger burned. Is there anything left for ME? Does anyone care about ME? Does this world…..see……ME?

How do I find my way back? Dare I go back the way I came? My world is gray. I can’t see the sun. There are no rays of hope. Peace I cannot find and sweet release through sleep eludes me. Every way I turn I see confusion, pain, and suffering. Anger, jealousy, bitterness, and unforgiveness are my friends, but in them I find no joy, no satisfaction. I am in a world filled with people, yet I am lonely. I hear whispers…they must be about ME. I hear laughter…it must be at MY expense. Where is God in all this? There is no god. And if there is, he does not care. He sits at a distance, not concerned with the affairs of mankind. He does not care about ME. I beat my chest and cry, “HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT ME!”

G—o— d……are you there? Do you see—me? Did you ever love—me? Is there still hope for—me?

Is my mind playing tricks? Did I hear another whisper? The voice is not familiar, yet it seems like I have heard it before. There it is again! Who whispered my name?! I see no one near. I’ve looked all around. I guess it was just my imagination, my mind running wild.

I am no stranger to whispers……voices that stay in my head. They shout of condemnation……they tell me I am a failure……that I am worthless……that I will never be good enough.

Another whisper! But, this voice is different. Its tone is softer, gentler. Somehow, it tugs at my heart strings and stirs something inside……a feeling of long ago yesterdays……a melody that pulls me…….draws me to it like a sweet fragrance…….it seems so familiar……could--it--really--be?

G—o— d……are you there?

Why does my heart flutter? Again, a stirring within……a barren well coming alive from old springs that were dammed. Rushing water......crystal clear......cool and refreshing. Satisfying a thirst……didn’t know I was so parched……I can’t get enough. My eyes squinting.....a ray of light from above......I can’t turn away. My heart bursting……..a feeling so grand. Weight is lifting. Sand no longer shifting. A blanket of warmth.

G—o— d……are You there? Child, I’m here....

Do You see—me? Do You still love—me? Is there still hope for—me?

This time I heard Him! It really is He? He’s not in the distance! He’s right here with me!

I’m sorry I hurt You. Lord, I’m sorry I lied. I tried to forget You, but Your love would not die. You broke through my dark clouds and tore down my wall because I was worth it, now You’ve made me Your child.

No longer a slave. In chains I was bound. I was so lost, but now I am found! His goodness and mercy, compassion and love, cracked open a stone heart, and placed in His own.

No longer in darkness. Hope, I can see. The God of all comfort is now living in me. For what He has done I can never repay……before Him I’ll bow on resurrection day.

Until I see Him and fall at His feet, I’ll walk through this land, many I’ll meet. Each I will tell of His marvelous grace, never stopping until I see His beautiful face.

But, first, I must make amends. Many I’ve hurt. True hearts that loved me...…where are the words? How can I go back? What will they say? My child, they still love you…still to this day. They wait with open arms. To you they will run. The day they have prayed for……the homecoming……of their prodigal son.

There will be rejoicing in heaven that will ring throughout time. More rejoicing for one than the ninety and nine. Although God told the story of a prodigal son, many daughters have fallen and terrible things they have done. But, God in His mercy, has loved them as well, and His great love to them He will tell. For daughters become princesses and His sons are a prince and to Him great glory comes through all this.

Pride has been broken. God's grace abounds. Glory to God in the highest we all do resound!

TO THE HUMBLE: “And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for GOD RESISTETH THE PROUD, and GIVETH GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may EXALT YOU in due time.” ~1 Peter 5:4-6
